Skylight Tubes - anyone know anything about them???

Seen several different versions (brands) of this. Sure seems like a smart thing to have. I can't find prices anywhere. Does anyone know how much they are? Anybody have one? Thanks, SilverJeep

I think they ought to be illegal. You start sucking up all that sunlight, and pretty soon, they will none left for the rest of us.

My Mother had one installed in a bathroom. The bathroom is interior to the house, no windows. The tube lets in a remarkable amount of light.

She used a local contractor who was affiliated with the tube company. I don't know the name but it was inexpensive compared to a traditional rectangle window skylight.

I replaced a vent fan light in an older 50's flat roof modern style house for my Mom a few years ago with one. Worked pretty well, except the damn thing kept burning out after dark, right when you needed it the most. :D

How much do they cost???

Is this a $30, $300, or $3000 deal?

I think it was less than $500 installed. I don't really remember, it was 6 or 7 years ago.

Here is the web site of the dealer that did the install:

When i installed some skylites in a house I used to have someone said "I don't know why anyone would cut a hole in a perfectly good roof". After some damage to sheetrock I finally got all the leaks stopped.

I had a sunroof on a truck once, took it apart twice to fix it, end result I sealed it closed and put a heavy bead of silicone all around it. Then I painted the underside to stop the sun from coming in.

Why not buy a few ounces of silver instead?

I've never put one in....here's a website of a place that sells Velux brand. IF they are anything like Velux skylights, which I have put in a lot of, including two in my own house, I'd highly recommend them.....Velux has skylights figured out to where, if correctly installed, they are leakproof.....only brand I'd even look at.

The 10" model starts at 170 FRNs.

By the way, you could burn 2 --18watt compact floresent lites 24hrs a day for 8 years for the same money. Just a thought.....

The sun consumes 5 million tons of hydrogen per second, yet radiates only a small fraction of this in the direction of Earth. In turn, only a small share of this energy lands on buildings and plants -- much is wasted heating vast expanses of empty ocean or desert.

There is a broad consensus among scientists, memo-writing bureaucrats, and corporate chieftains that this resource would be better managed according to market pnnciples, with the appropriate taxation incentives toward efficient use, in such a manner as to benefit the wealthiest, and therefore most efficient, among our nation's corporate officers and stockholders, as well as the governmental agencies who are indispensible in efficiently allocating our natural resources.

To this end, it is logical that the process of solar fusion be brought to a conclusion, and that the elemental hydrogen thereby made available, be privatized and subject to open-market bidding, including futures contracts and options. This would make the hydrogen economy possible, and would have the non-coincidental benefit of giving the existing energy companies, who have worked tirelessly for the benefit of everyone, a new resource to control, if for no other reason than that they already are quite huge and have many powerful government connections.

The energy made available from the harvest of hydrogen from a dead star will finally allow complete adoption of the automobile, and eliminate any remaining need for walking, lifting, or other connection with the natural world. This includes the production of food by inefficient and selfish non-corporate entities, such as individuals. The continuous nighttime will allow for more viewing of televised entertainment and unbiased news from corporate-certified central bureaus. Increases in energy availability will of course make possible a previously-unimagined quantity of cheap crap.

Putting out the sun and then privatizing it is the way to a brighter future for everyone. Just as all other human attempts to modify and alter nature have proven successful, so too will this project: "Cool Earth, Cheap Energy."

Won't you join us?

I guess I mean by leakproof, I mean the flashing kit that comes with them.

But one of mine has been in the roof now since 1984, and the other, I added about 12 years ago when another brand leaked and ruined the plywood under the roofing. No problem with either.

I've put dozens of them in for folks over the years, never had a callback.

I stand by what I said.

And a souless thought it is. Brrrrr.

Any light is better than none, but sunlight affects us in a way not yet duplicated in other lights, or in the pharmaceutical industry, for that matter.
